Feeling that Velveteen Vaccine had become too 'clean' sounding and had deviated too far from its original sound, I decided to take a step back and create a set of songs that sounded darker and more raw. I re-evaluated this project after nearly giving it up, and I asked myself what I thought Velveteen Vaccine should be and what it should sound like. And after a two month period of writing and insomnia, the answer was 'Colony Collapse Disorder'. Incidentally, this is also the only Velveteen Vaccine release to date that has a physical copy (available through Amazon). Looking back, Colony Collapse Disorder was an important album for me as a musician because it draws a clear line between the way I used to write and the way I've written since. Oddly, it doesn't sound much like either. Maybe it was the insomnia. But it kind of stands alone as its own experiment. It's simultaneously my least favorite and my favorite Velveteen Vaccine album.
